Source tagging is very powerful source code navigation system, it beats any state of the art IDE. If you are using Emacs, Vim and TextMate then you can use source tagging for navigation. Here are the few simple steps to do it.

Step 1. Install ctags in your system. For mac

$ sudo port install ctags

Step 2. Create A tag file

$ cd /Users/username/Workspace/rails-project
$ ctags -e -a --Ruby-kinds=+f -o TAGS -R app/ lib/ config/

It is best to add this in crontab for this around 11:30am

Step 3.1 emacs

M-. Follow a tag
M-* Jump back to source.

Step 3.2 vim
just add this in your ~/.vimrc

set tags=TAGS;/

Once this is done you can navigate to source of tag by using.

C-] - go to definition
C-T - Jump back from the definition.
C-W C-] - Open the definition in a horizontal split

Hope you will be able to use this awesome feature.
C is ctrl
M is Meta/Alt/Ecs

Recently I came to know that DNS entry for the .tel domains can not be updated. So there is no way you can host your own directory/custom website. Seriously guys there could be some thing which could be done.

Adobe Flex aka Fx is a great open source tool. I happen to understand the Ajax/PHP and Curl so I can compare Flex with these.

In my opinion Flex is great. You can create a application with minimum ActionScript coding. Basic layout of a flex application is in MXML and ActionScript is used for more control just like we use HTML and JavaScript.

I have been trying the Flex charting API. I will say that they are extensive and very easy to use. Flex platform is Open Source and licensed under Mozilla Public license.

I will keep readers updated in Flex as soon as I get to some thing new.

Curl – A gentle slope system

Recently I (Shishir Sharma ‘criss’ )came to know about Curl Language. It’s a MIT – DARPA project. It’s a multi-paradigm hybrid functional language. Curl is reflective, homo-iconic, object oriented programming language. It supports closures, macros and declarative layouts.

Its syntax is based on TEX and has a big set of formatting operations. Curl is very scientific language, As they state …

“one uses the same easy-to-learn syntax to create interactive documents as to create regular text documents.”

Curl is highly extendible, components can also be developed for curl using Curl only.I also impressed with road map curl is following. As they state

“Curl is intended to be a gentle slope system, accessible to content creators at all skill levels ranging from authors new to the web to experienced programmers. By using a simple, uniform language syntax and semantics, Curl avoids the discontinuities experienced by current web users who have to juggle HTML, JavaScript, Java, Perl, etc. to create today’s exciting sites. Our hope is that the single environment provided by Curl will be an attractive alternative for web developers”

I am surprised why it is not popular in India. This language deserved a popular place all over the world. It’s targeted to RIA (Rich internet application). Apparently soon it will be a competition for Adobe AIR/FLEX/MS Silver light and believe me it will be beating them.

As we all know all the windows user are cursed by proprietary policy. Its very difficult to find common useful tools which are available on Linux.

I [Shishir Sharma] recently needed indenting tool on Windows XP. Then obvious choice is GNU INDENT. I have used it on fedora. Thanks to GnuWin32 which provides ports of tools with a GNU or similar open source license, to MS-Windows.

GnuWin32 provides ports of tools with a GNU or similar open source license, to MS-Windows (Microsoft Windows 95 / 98 / ME / NT / 2000 / XP / 2003 / Vista / 2008). This is what they say about themselves.

The GnuWin32 project provides Win32-versions of GNU tools, or tools with a similar open source licence. The ports are native ports, that is they rely only on libraries provided with any standard 32-bits MS-Windows operating system, such as MS-Windows 95 / 98 / ME / NT / 2000 / XP / 2003 / Vista. Native ports do not rely on some kind of Unix emulation, such as CygWin or Msys, so that there is no need to install additional emulation libraries.

At present, all developments have been done under MS-Windows-XP, using the Mingw port of the GNU C and C++ (GCC) compilers. Utilities and libraries provided by GnuWin32, are used and distributed with packages such as GNU Emacs and KDE-Windows.

The packages that have been ported, fall into four broad categories:

GNU utilities: bc, bison, chess, compface, cpio, coreutils (fileutils, sh-utils, stat, textutils), diffutils, doschk, ed, findutils, flex, gawk, gdbm, gcal, gengetopt, gettext, gperf, grep, groff, gsl, gzip, hello, help2man, iconv, jwhois, less, m4, miscfiles, patch, readline, regex, rx, sed, sharutils, tar, texinfo, tree, units, unrtf, wget, which

Archivers and compressors: arc, arj, bsdtar, bzip2, gzip, lha, libarchive, unzip / zip, zlib

Other utilities: byacc, cpuid, cygutils, file, ntfsprogs, openssl, pcre, popt, re2c, rpl, sgrep, tree, x86info

Graphics packages: asciichart, compface, gd, jpeg, jbigkit, liburt, libungif, libpng and png utilities, libwmf, netpbm, piechart, plotutils, tiff, xpm, zimg

Textprocessing- and postscript-related packages: a2ps, barcode, bm2font, deroff, dvidj, enscript, freetype, grap, gri, groff, indent, libxml, nenscript, pdflib, polyglotman, psutils, scribe2latex, src-highlite, t1lib, t1utils, troff2latex, ttf2pt1, unrtf

Mathematical and statistical packages: bc, calc, crypt, fdlibm, gsl, units

Some other characteristics of GnuWin32 are:

GnuWin32 comes with a very nice Installer; some thing of which most of the windows users are accustomed. GnuWin32 always provides the source, which usually is also required by the license of the original package, with any changes from the original source in the form of a diff. GnuWin32 always provides the documentation in a ‘compiled’ form, i.e. as PDF, HTML, PS, DVI, CHM, and HLP. GnuWin32 provides import libraries for MSVC and BCC wherever possible.

Libraries

In general, static and import C libraries from GnuWin32 should be interoperable with other libraries compiled with Mingw, MSVC and BCC, although the options with which the library files have been compiled might differ; in particular, most libraries, and binaries, from GnuWin32 have been compiled without debug option. C++ libraries from different compilers are not in general interoperable.

Patches

The patches to the source code are given in unified diffs, usually in files ending in -diffs or .diff. In particular for packages whose source is infrequently updated, we try to keep track of the patches for FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Debian, Fedora, Red Hat, and Suse.

Well our old friend Python have a good news to share. Python Enhancement Proposal 3000 (pep 3ooo) states that py3k project will lead to a new version of python which will be no longer compatible to 2.x.

The original pep 3ooo was written in Apr 2006, and since then developers are constantly improving the language.

The pep 3ooo states Python 3.0 will break backwards compatibility with Python 2.x.

There is no requirement that Python 2.6 code will run unmodified on Python 3.0. Not even a subset. (Of course there will be a tiny subset, but it will be missing major functionality.)

Python 2.6 will support forward compatibility in the following two ways:

It will support a “Py3k warnings mode” which will warn dynamically (i.e. at runtime) about features that will stop working in Python 3.0, e.g. assuming that range() returns a list.

It will contain back ported versions of many Py3k features, either enabled through __future__ statements or simply by allowing old and new syntax to be used side-by-side (if the new syntax would be a syntax error in 2.x).
